\"Jasper\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019ve just received an email from a friend in pain.\u00a0 <\/span>He\u2019s poured his heart out in this email over the loss of his best friend Jasper.\u00a0 <\/span>There are many of you that are reading this and remembering best friends that you\u2019ve known and loved.\u00a0 <\/span>There are others that will never understand the magnitude of that love and that saddens me.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m not sure that my friend understands the magnitude of Jasper\u2019s legacy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First let me say that Jasper\u2019s appearance into Shawn\u2019s life was a destiny beyond the universe.\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019m sure, although I don\u2019t know with any certainty, that had he not found that dirty street dog my life would be much different.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Shawn is a dog trainer.\u00a0 <\/span>I call him my friend despite the fact that I\u2019ve only seen him an hour and half at a time for all of three times.\u00a0 <\/span>I believe he calls me friend too.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I adopted two little girls from a woman in Arkansas who found them as two dirty street dogs and took them under her wing.\u00a0 <\/span>The girls were destined to live with me by the sheer ease with which they made their way to Stowe Lane where I live.\u00a0 <\/span>But once they got here all manner of ease was gone.\u00a0 <\/span>I was in a state of change I couldn\u2019t even begin to know.\u00a0 <\/span>The girls were in a state of change they couldn\u2019t begin to know either.\u00a0 <\/span>A perfect storm.\u00a0 <\/span>I loved them the minute I met them and they me but everyone else was kept at arm\u2019s length, literally.\u00a0 <\/span>Slowly, I began to isolate myself again.\u00a0 <\/span>The very thing I ran from was happening again and I had to stop it.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Enter Shawn.\u00a0 <\/span>Jasper had trained him well.\u00a0 <\/span>He enters a home with a grace and presence that only a street dog can teach a man.\u00a0 <\/span>His energy has been learned from a teacher like Jasper.\u00a0 <\/span>Lina, my fearful Staffordshire terrier mix, who usually peed at anyone\u2019s mere presence, fell in behind Shawn and relaxed. \u00a0<\/span>Toto, my Wire Haired Terrier mix quickly relinquished her protectiveness for Shawn\u2019s rules.\u00a0 <\/span>As did I.\u00a0 <\/span>Slowly, I came to believe that I was in control.\u00a0 <\/span>That I could love these girls within the boundaries that would keep us all safe and give us the life we deserved. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>We walk all over our neighborhood now; we are not afraid but confident.\u00a0 <\/span>We have rules and understanding.\u00a0 <\/span>We have each other for the rest of our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jasper\u2019s message to Shawn has been learned by most of us who\u2019ve become his friend.\u00a0 <\/span>I do my best for my girls every day and they reward me with the same love and loyalty that Jasper and Shawn have shown each other.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I have lost dogs in my lifetime and, with the exception of one, I have been by their sides when they have crossed that same bridge.\u00a0 <\/span>There is no greater sense of loss one could ever feel.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>I also know that what we do when we let our friends go is more humane and selfless than you can ever know.\u00a0 I can only hope that someone will love me enough to do that for me one day when I have surpassed my ability to enjoy life.\u00a0 <\/span>But through that pain we become who we are meant to be, we learn our strength and pass it on to the next.\u00a0 <\/span>All these experiences give us the capacity to love and care for the next best friends that come into our lives. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And indeed they will come into our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope Shawn will feel his pain all the way through so that he can come out the other side with even more love in his heart.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>As for Jasper, he joins my Toby, Pearl and beloved Murphy. \u00a0<\/span>Very good company for sharing a double cheeseburger. \u00a0<\/span>You\u00a0remain in our hearts and prayers.<\/span><\/p>\n
