{"id":745,"date":"2012-05-27T22:42:51","date_gmt":"2012-05-28T02:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/?p=745"},"modified":"2012-06-28T16:39:05","modified_gmt":"2012-06-28T20:39:05","slug":"decoration-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/2012\/05\/27\/decoration-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Decoration Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/red-poppy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-746\" title=\"red poppy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/red-poppy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a>Did you realize the significance of those poppies the VFW are always giving away in exchange for a few dollars each Memorial Day?<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a>In 1915, inspired by the poem &#8220;In Flanders Fields,&#8221; Moina Michael replied with her own poem:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We cherish too, the Poppy red<br \/>\nThat grows on fields where valor led,<br \/>\nIt seems to signal to the skies<br \/>\nThat blood of\u00a0heroes never dies.<\/p>\n<p>Decoration day became Memorial Day in 1868 and was first observed on May 30th\u00a01868.\u00a0 Moina Michael conceived of the idea of wearing the red poppy\u00a0on Memorial\u00a0Day to honor the war dead of our nation.\u00a0The VFW created the &#8220;Buddy\u00a0Program&#8221; in 1922 and continued the practice of selling poppies made by disabled veterans who would be paid for their work to provide some financial assistance. \u00a0Moina Michael&#8217;s image graced a 3cent stamp in 1948 as tribute to her contibution.<\/p>\n<p>So what has Memorial day become?\u00a0 After making Memorial Day the third Monday in May, it has become the &#8220;unofficial start of summer&#8221;, a sale day, a three day holiday of barbeques and shore runs.\u00a0 It is losing its meaning as a day to honor our war dead.\u00a0 Not to honor those who served, that would be Veteran&#8217;s Day, not to honor all the dead, really?\u00a0 It is the day we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and yes, for our freedom&#8230; to barbeque and shop and bake in the sun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In December 2000 the &#8220;National Moment of Remembrance&#8221; resolution was passed\u00a0which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, for all Americans &#8220;To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to &#8216;Taps.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is no more mournful sound then that of Taps, it will stop you in your tracks and bring tears to your eyes no matter how strong you are or how little you know of its origins.\u00a0 It is a fitting tribute and the very least we can do in the sceme of what these heroes have done for us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did you realize the significance of those poppies the VFW are always giving away in exchange for a few dollars each Memorial Day?
