{"id":25,"date":"2009-07-05T13:39:04","date_gmt":"2009-07-05T20:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.2soar.info\/word\/?p=25"},"modified":"2017-07-08T14:06:35","modified_gmt":"2017-07-08T18:06:35","slug":"peaches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/2009\/07\/05\/peaches\/","title":{"rendered":"Father&#8217;s Daugher Moment: Peaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I\u2019ve just finished reading Barbara Kingsolver\u2019s book \u201cAnimal Vegetable Miracle\u201d about her family&#8217;s year of eating as locally as they could.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I confess I won\u2019t be doing nearly the local eating that they did but I have begun to visit farmer\u2019s markets in my area.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Last Sunday\u2019s visit to the farmer\u2019s market had early peaches that smelled so wonderful they brought me back to my youth.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I hadn\u2019t smelled that fragrance in forty years.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I couldn\u2019t buy the whole bushel the way we used to but I brought home a half dozen.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">As I was cutting one open I remembered how my father used to hold the peach in one hand and work the knife around the crease until it fell open.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The pit was almost always split with the seed inside showing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He could carve around the pit if necessary but most times they would just lift away from the flesh of the peach.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I buried many a peach seed in the back yard but never produced a tree.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Then he would slice the peaches into a bowl of milk and Frosted Flakes.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>The sweet inside of the peach and the slightly bitter skin worked so well with the crunchy sweet flakes and milk. Real milk from the milkman, we didn\u2019t know about 1% or skim back then.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was a delicious combination especially at the end when you would slurp the sweetened milk from the bottom of the bowl.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">It became very clear to me what Barbara Kingsolver was talking about with regard to taste and the perfection of locally grown foods.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>I don\u2019t buy Frosted Flakes any more, nor do I buy whole milk\u00a0and my father is no longer with us. But for that one moment I could have been sitting at the Formica kitchen table on Hillside Avenue.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Where I can, I hope to take advantage of locally grown fruits, vegetables, cheeses and meats.
