{"id":1855,"date":"2014-04-13T16:41:29","date_gmt":"2014-04-13T20:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/?p=1855"},"modified":"2014-04-13T16:41:29","modified_gmt":"2014-04-13T20:41:29","slug":"air-texting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/2014\/04\/13\/air-texting\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Texting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like texting in the air without having your phone&#8230;you mimic real texting&#8230;STOP DOING THAT.\u00a0 RIGHT NOW.\u00a0\u00a0 Unless you want to be mistaken for someone who should be rocking back and forth on the psych ward you need to stop.\u00a0\u00a0 It looks ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>It scares me that just the mention of the word text causes people to do this.\u00a0 Have we lost all sense of being among the living that we are struck by some Pavlovian trigger to move our fingers when we talk about what we said to someone via text message?<\/p>\n<p>There is actually a Facebook page; they call themselves a community, Air Texting Rocks:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/air-texting.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1857\" alt=\"air texting\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/air-texting.png\" width=\"457\" height=\"659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/air-texting.png 457w, https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/air-texting-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This community is screaming teenage angst.\u00a0 So far they\u2019ve got 15 Likes, been up since 2010 and hopefully have outgrown being grounded from their phones over the last 4 years.\u00a0 Who knows?<\/p>\n<p>I get this silliness from teenagers.\u00a0 I don\u2019t get the trigger response from adults.\u00a0 I know you think I\u2019m sounding anti-technology but I am actually a fan of technology when it enhances my life.\u00a0 I was one of the first people shopping on line, paying bills on line, I had, and still have (no snappy remarks) one of the first Tivos.\u00a0 I love my laptop and even more my IPad.\u00a0 But when it comes to the phone I know it\u2019s just another piece of equipment.\u00a0 I use it to make my life easier but it doesn\u2019t define my world.\u00a0 I feel lucky to have been on the cusp of new technology while still young enough to appreciate it and make it part of my language but old enough to understand that human interaction is key to a long and healthy life.<\/p>\n<p>While waiting to be seating in a restaurant the other night I watched a couple stand side by side each on their own phone.\u00a0 There was no conversation.\u00a0 There was literally no interaction.\u00a0 They had the look of a couple out without the kids, or out after a hard day, or even if it was just out for a quick bite they didn\u2019t speak to each other.\u00a0 What could be so enthralling on their phones that they didn\u2019t feel the need to speak.\u00a0 When I\u2019m with my people, I\u2019m with my people.\u00a0 No phones allowed.\u00a0 I want to hear what you have to say, I\u2019m interested in you.\u00a0 If you aren\u2019t interested enough in me to put your phone away for a couple of hours you\u2019re not my people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/with-my-people.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1856\" alt=\"with my people\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/with-my-people-1024x435.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/with-my-people-1024x435.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/with-my-people-300x127.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ordinarylegacy.com\/word\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/with-my-people-500x212.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t speak without air texting you have a problem.\u00a0 Your technology has become something other than a tool.\u00a0 It has gotten under your skin and into your brain.\u00a0 What if technology fails?\u00a0 Are you self-reliant enough to withstand down time?<\/p>\n<p>Tom Chatfield from the BBC:<\/p>\n<p><i>If it\u2019s disconcerting that checking my smartphone has become a habit, there\u2019s a particular irony for me: for the last few months, I\u2019ve been involved in a project to design a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au\/news\/switch-off-chill-out\/2034200\/\">code of conduct<\/a><\/i><i>\u201d for smartphone usage on Australia\u2019s Sunshine Coast. The code comes in seven parts, and aims to help holiday makers stop their smartphones taking over time they\u2019ve set aside for leisure, each other and the place they\u2019re in. Behind it, though, lies something that applies to us all: the need for new etiquettes in an era where shared notions of acceptable behavior lag years, if not decades, behind the tools we\u2019ve incorporated into our lives.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>My phone code of conduct? If you call my cell phone after 9 it will go to voice mail.\u00a0 If you call and I don\u2019t call you back, get over it.\u00a0 I\u2019ve taken to checking my messages at certain times of the day, I\u2019m not a doctor it\u2019s never an emergency.\u00a0 Unless, of course, you\u2019re my Mother in which case everything is the end of the world.\u00a0 If I\u2019m out with friends, not gonna get me because if I\u2019m with you I\u2019m with you.<\/p>\n<p>Most of all, STOP AIR TEXTING, you&#8217;re acting like the phone is\u00a0a phantom limb and it demeans you on so many levels.\u00a0 You are a person of high intelligence that can certainly have a conversation without it. Surely you must know what to do with your hands while speaking.
